What's in a Name? A name defines a person, a place, or a website, and so I put quite a bit of thought into what I would call myself. It was easy to come up with Globetrotter because we travel the world as much as possible. Out of traveler, tourist, or globetrotter, I think it fit the best.
Sometimes I wear the moniker of tourist. After all, there is a reason that tourist attractions are so popular. They are among the best sites to see in a region and I don't want to skip them. The problem is that just hitting the main sites can give a shallow understanding of an area, but when I am strapped for time, I join the tourists.
Sometimes, I am a traveler, and I shun the most visited spots in lieu of attractions that only the locals know about. I especially like to do this on longer visits to a place so that I can really understand the culture and the people. I have traveled to places and stayed for a month and I traveled to places that I have stayed even longer. You get to see how everyday life is lived when you go as a traveler, from the grocery shopping to eating at the neighborhood restaurant that is not known to the tourists. If I stay long enough, I may experience the utility companies or the local laundry. You really get to know people and become a part of where you are in the world. I love when I get to be a traveler.
The term globetrotter, though, encompasses both of those, A globetrotter gets to see whatever sites they choose on any given day, as long is it is somewhere in the world other than where you live. Globetrotters meet new people in the market, receive a greeting from the local merchant, and stand in line with the hoards of tourists to see the best landmarks. It is the best of both worlds.
It took me a little longer to decide what adjective described me best, but when I saw that Webster's dictionary defined gallivanting as "to travel, roam, or move about for pleasure", I knew that was the right choice. I find the utmost enjoyment from walking through a village in Europe that is off of the beaten path, or looking at ancient archetecture in Mexico. That definition fully describes me. Yes, it is a rather outdated term, but at 55, I am a little outdated myself!
I am excited to have you journey with us as we travel through the United States and abroad, to every corner of the world.
